The federally funded WIC program has served eligible participants for more than 40 years by providing nutrition, breastfeeding education, and access to nutritious foods and to regular health care. The program reaches millions of families every year, and is an important investment in the nation’s health. Through the Oklahoma State Health Department (OSDH), Oklahoma WIC has worked to create convenient ways to provide meaningful services to its participants who are breastfeeding and nonbreastfeeding post-partum women, and infants and children up to the age of five. Greer County Health Department is excited to announce that the WIC paper checks have been replaced with an electronic benefits card to better serve its WIC participants The new eWIC card will benefit participants by providing a safe, simple and convenient way to purchase WIC approved food and formula. Safe: A Personal Identification Number (PIN) helps prevent loss or theft of benefits. Additionally, the card can be replaced if lost or stolen. Simple: The entire families’ benefits are combined on one account. Participants can purchase items as needed and from multiple stores if desired. Convenient: In most cases, participants will no longer have to separate WIC foods during check out and will enjoy a quicker check out process. The receipt will highlight the amount of WIC foods purchased as well as the amount of remaining benefits. In addition to the card, participants can also take advantage of the option to complete nutrition education requirements through online nutrition education. With the combination of eWIC and online nutrition education opportunities, eligible participants will have the ability to obtain some of their benefits without coming into the WIC clinic.
